Should the government regulate the internet to protect users' privacy
Pros |
Cons |
Companies on the internet are concerned primarily with making money. User privacy is a secondary concern at best. Government regulations would handle that online business handle user information responsibly. |
Today, computer software can scramble credit card numbers, which will protect users from having their information stolen or missing or misused. |

Why not. I think that overall, cyber security is a great idea. We are starting to see more and more sophisticated cyber attacks, launched by foreign countries. We are very vulnerable to those hackers. Protection online would also help businesses against customers who try to sue them for a cyber attack. Cyber security is a great idea. There is so many hackers, and people really do need to be protected! Side: yes

I say yes, because other people shouldn't know our own personal stuff. Let's say that we are sharing business on a unprotected website, a stranger could join in on your conversation, see what you guys are doing, and know all of the business plans that he could spread to other businesses. So I think we should protect our internet. Side: yes

Yes I think the government should be able to regulate it. They should because we can see if we are getting hacked and we can also warn others. We can also use it to help protect us. Like checking on our bank accounts and seeing if its being hacked or not. But I think the government should be restricted to how much they do. I do not think they should be able to see every click of the mouse that we do. We should still have the freedom to look up what we want without somebody monitoring us 24/7. Side: yes

I think that the government should regulate the internet, but the amount that the government regulates the internet should also be regulated. They need to regulate it enough to help prevent hackers and unwanted sites, but they should not be able to ban websites unless they are illegal. They should help protect our bank accounts, stock accounts, and other businesses' websites. They need to give us security need that we without taking away our freedom that we stand for. Side: yes

Alright, so actually I could go either way. I wouldn't want to be stalked on the internet by the government, because that would be weird. However, some things could be good. If they keep an eye on major business or banks, they could stop hacker from taking over. Otherwise if it's just stalking everyone, I'm against it. It's a violation of personal space. Side: no

Government should not be able to watch us when we are online. Reliable site keep us safe and have walls so people can't brake in and take users info. We should be able to trust the sites or its not a good site to be on in the first place. If you don't feel safe online don't go online. We should have the right to privacy and making our own decisions about what we use and not have to be watched and restricted. Side: no

I don't agree with you. What if you make one mistake on your computer. Then people could see your information. People are getting smarter and smarter on the computers. If you make one little mistake that releases your information you are almost prone to getting hacked in some way. Side: yes

I think that we should not have regulations on the internet because we already have updates so fast that the regulations wouldn’t be able to keep up, and online businesses have already created software to protect the buyers’ information and to make sure that they are human. There’s no need for more government regulations on the internet. Side: no

Oh, I almost forgot this. Even if they do have the bill passed, parents of young children would be mad. This would basically stalk little children. I would have a major problem with this if I had children. It would basically be like china, when they can look at everything that would happen. Side: no
Companies on the internet are concerned primarily with making money. They should just protect companies more and leave is out of it. I feel like I’m safe enough. User privacy is a secondary concern at best. Use a stronger type of protection. Government regulations would ensure that online businesses handle user information responsibly. Not that I do anything bad, I just would want the government constantly breathing over my neck 24/7. Internet sites are not required to tell researchers and shoppers there information… I feel like if you’re on eBay you should know at least a little something about the person you’re dealing with. Government regulations would force… I preferably don’t want to be forced for anything. Online businesses want to keep their costumers coming back. This would ruin their businesses… Side: no

It’s a good idea, no doubt about that. But I don’t agree with it. If the government is monitoring what you watch, then that’s an invasion of privacy. Theyre being just like the hackers and creepers that already do that! The government can put up a security system, but no to the internet monitoring. Also, it a communistic idea. China already monitors their internet (you cant even Google carrot), and if the US starts doing that, well, it gives them a ton of power. They can access everything on the internet, THE INTERNET. Its HUGE! All that info in the palm of their hands, its to much. Plus, there is software you can buy to protect yourself from all the bad stuff. Id personally buy a $60 program then let the government see what i'm doing 24/7. As a last note, how much would this cost? Were already trillions over in debt, and if their going to buy cyber security… that’s gotta cost something. I think they should just set up security on important stuff, and not the whole thing, maybe like a high powered firewall, but no surveillance. Side: no

I think that they don't need to, because most of the things are already protected without the government having to watch what we do. We have things protected already and they say that it will protect us from hackers, well they are already hackers so won't they be able to just hack into the security thing that they would put there? I think that it would be really pointless and just a way to know what everyone is doing with out there being a reason. Side: no
I'm actually not really sure I could go either way too, but I mostly think no because if they make more laws and block every little thing that has one little bad thing on it, we probably wouldn't the internet cause a lot of site have something bad about it, but most of the time we can decide whether we should or not go on that site because it usually says what the site is about.
